This is a list of Category A listed buildings in Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland. In Scotland, the term listed building refers to a building or other structure officially designated as being of "special architectural or historic interest". Category A structures are those considered to be "buildings of national or international importance, either architectural or historic, or fine little-altered examples of some particular period, style or building type." Listing was begun by a provision in the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1947, and the current legislative basis for listing is the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997. The authority for listing rests with Historic Scotland, an executive agency of the Scottish Government, which inherited this role from the Scottish Development Department in 1991. Aberdeenshire In Scotland
Aberdeenshire ( sco, Aiberdeenshire; gd, Siorrachd Obar Dheathain) is one of the 32 Subdivisions of Scotland#council areas of Scotland, council areas of Scotland. It takes its name from the County of Aberdeen which has substantially different boundaries. The Aberdeenshire Council area includes all of the area of the Counties of Scotland, historic counties of Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire (except the area making up the City of Aberdeen), as well as part of Banffshire. The county boundaries are officially used for a few purposes, namely land registration and Lieutenancy areas of Scotland, lieutenancy. Lumsden, Aberdeenshire
Lumsden is an inland village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland on the A97 road. Location It crowns a rising-ground above sea level amid a fertile district. It is situated around northwest of Alford and is near both the River Don and the upper course of the Water of Bogie. History The village was founded around 1825 by Harry Leith Lumsden of Auchindoir on what was then a barren moor. Population The population was 243 in 1840, 478 in 1861, 487 in 1871 and 519 in 1881. The population in 2009 is 344, a decline to levels before 1861. Transport The village is served once a day on weekdays by the 231 service between Alford and Huntly. Oldmeldrum
Oldmeldrum (commonly known as Meldrum) is a village and parish in the Formartine area of Aberdeenshire, not far from Inverurie in North East Scotland. With a population of around 2,187, Oldmeldrum falls within Scotland's top 300 centres of population. Oldmeldrum is home to one of the oldest whisky distilleries in Scotland, Glen Garioch, which was built in 1797. Local industries are agriculture and engineering services connected to the oil industry in Aberdeen. Prehistory and archaeology Archaeological excavations in advance of the construction of a new bypass road around the north of Oldmeldrum, in the summer 2005, revealed the remains of three Bronze Age ring-ditch roundhouses. Balmedie
Balmedie ( gd, Baile Mheadhain) is a large village in Aberdeenshire in Scotland. It lies north of the city of Aberdeen, in the civil parish of Belhelvie. The long and wide beach is bordered by an extensive dune system that stretches from Aberdeen to just north of the Ythan Estuary at Newburgh. The dynamic dunes has marram grass as the principal vegetation. They support a large array of wildlife. Two watercourses make their way to the sea within the area creating ribbons of wetland vegetation along their course. The village is near the Sands of Forvie Site of Special Scientific Interest, the fifth largest sand dune system in Britain; this is an integral part of the Ythan Estuary, which separates the sands from Balmedie beach. New Aberdour
New Aberdour is a small planned village in the Aberdour parish of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, situated south of Aberdour Bay on the Moray Firth. It lies west of Fraserburgh. One of the earliest churches in Scotland is said to have been founded here in 580 AD by Saint Drostan and Saint Columba. In October 1797, William Gordon of Aberdour chose this high, exposed plateau for his "village upon an estate near the Kirk of Aberdour". He then invited "industrious tradesmen and labourers" to live there. The Commercial Hotel was built, it is believed, in 1798. As of 2021, it is on Scotland's Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland, Buildings at Risk Register. The harled parish church dates to 1818, designed by John Smith (architect), John Smith. It reuses the 1771 bellcote from the church of St Drostan in Aberdour. During World War II, a German Heinkel HE115 crashed near a farm on Windyheads Hill. Local people assisted an injured airman.
