Liberia At The 2012 Summer Olympics
Liberia competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's eleventh appearance at the Olympics since its debut in 1956. The team comprised four Liberians: three athletes, and for the first time, one jukoda. Among these athletes, American-born decathlete Jangy Addy was the only one to compete at his second consecutive Olympics. Sprinter Phobay Kutu-Akoi, a psychology graduate from St. John's University in New York, was the nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Liberia, however, was unable to win its first Olympic medal. Raasin McIntosh (born 29 April 1982, in Texas) is an Olympic hurdler and philanthropist. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed in the Women's 400 metres hurdles. She grew up in Houston and went on to attend the University of Texas on an athlete scholarship. She trained under a prominent track coach, Bev Kearney, and went on to represent the United States at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics. Phobay Kutu-Akoi (born 3 December 1987 in Monrovia, Liberia) is a Liberian athlete who competes in sprinting events. She represented her country in the 100 metres at the 2012 Summer Olympics. The Men's decathlon competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom, was held at the Olympic Stadium on 8–9 August. From the outset, new world record holder Ashton Eaton dominated the events with teammate Trey Hardee his closest competitor. Notable for his early exit, 2004 champion and former world record holder Roman Šebrle withdrew after finishing last in the 100 m. Jangy McKinley Addy (born 2 March 1985) is a Liberian decathlete. He was born in 1985 in Sacramento, California, was raised in Norcross, Georgia and attended the University of Tennessee. His parents are from Liberia and he was eligible to compete for that nation.
