Kennedy (surname)
Kennedy, with variant forms O'Kennedy and Kennedie, is a surname of Irish and Scottish origin that has also been used as a given name. Origins There have been several different etymologies given for the surname. One is that the name is an Anglicisation of ''Ó Cinnéide'', meaning "grandson of ''Cinnédidh''" or "grandson of ''Cinnéidigh''", with both of these personal names meaning "helmet headed." ''Ceanéidigh'' could be related to the old Gaelic name ''Cennétig'', which is known from Cennétig mac Lorcáin, the father of the Irish high king ''Brian mac Cennétig'', who himself was also known as ''Brian Bóruma'' or Brian Boru. There are also an Kennedy (Ireland), Irish Kennedy family and a Clan Kennedy, Scottish Kennedy clan of Carrick, Scotland, Carrick in Ayrshire, which are unrelated to one another. Another possibility is that ''Kennedy'' is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic languages, Gaelic ''Ó Ceannéidigh'' meaning "grandson of ''Ceannéidigh''". ''Ceannéidigh'' is a ...

Kennedy (given Name)
Kennedy (also spelled Kenedi, Kennedie, Kennedi) () is a unisex given name in the English language. The name is an Anglicised form of a masculine given name in the Irish language. Etymology According to Patrick Hanks and Flavia Hodges, the given name ''Kennedy'' is an Anglicised form of ''Cinnéidigh'', a masculine given name in the Irish language. This Irish name is composed of two elements: the first, ''ceann'', means "head"; the second, ''éidigh'', means "ugly".. According to Patrick Woulfe, who wrote in the early 19th century, ''Kennedy or Kynidi'' is an Anglicised form the Irish ''Cinnéididh'' and ''Cinnéidigh''. Woulfe derived these Irish names from two elements: the first, ''ceann'', meaning "a head"; the second, ''éide'', meaning "Armour"; hence the name can be thought to mean "helmet-headed". Other languages As a masculine given name, ''Kennedy'' can be rendered into Irish as ''Cinnéididh'' and ''Cinnéidigh'', and into Latin as ''Kinnedius''., which is a transcri ...

Kennedy Town
Kennedy Town is at the western end of Sai Wan on Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong. It was named after Arthur Edward Kennedy, the 7th Governor of Hong Kong from 1872 to 1877. Administratively, it is part of Central and Western District. Due to its distance from major commercial cores and longtime inaccessibility by train, town development was less vigorous than in other parts of urban Hong Kong. But since the MTR was extended to the area in 2014, it is rapidly gentrifying, with many older businesses, such as vehicle repair workshops and cha chaan tengs, making way for new luxury developments, as well as high-end bars and restaurants. Geography Kennedy Town occupies the northwestern part of Hong Kong Island. It is bordered by the Belcher Bay of Victoria Harbour to the north, by Sulphur Channel to the west, Shek Tong Tsui to the east and Mount Davis and Lung Fu Shan to the south. Historically, the district's western limit was legally defined as the western boundary of the City of ...

Kennedy (Ireland)
The O'Kennedy family (Irish: ''Ó Cinnéide''), sometimes Kennedy, were an Irish royal dynasty, a sept of the Dál gCais, founded in the Middle Ages who were Kings of Ormond. Their founder was the nephew of High King Brian Boru (1002–1014). The name ''Cinnéide'' belonged to Brian Boru's father Cennétig mac Lorcáin, King of Thomond, in the tenth century AD. (Brian Boru was an ''Ard Rí'' or High King of Ireland). The Kennedys did not descend directly from Brian Boru, but from Cinnéide's eldest son Donncuan. Donncuan's son Mahon was the first to call himself ''Ó Cinnéide'' which is Irish for grandson of ''Cinnéide''. Placenames such as Killokennedy in Thomond are indicative of their longstanding presence in the region. History The Kennedys belonged to the powerful Dál gCais people of Thomond, headed by the O'Briens. They resided in far eastern Clare, northern Limerick, Mayo, and northern Tipperary in an area called Ormond. Originally seated in Glemor, near Killaloe i ...
