Hungarian Brazilian
Hungarian Brazilians ( pt, húngaro-brasileiros or , hu, brazíliai magyarok) are Brazilians of full, partial, or predominantly Hungarian ancestry, or Hungarian-born people who emigrated to Brazil. According to the Embassy of Hungary to Brazil, there are between 80,000 and 100,000 Brazilians of Hungarian descent, most of them living in São Paulo and 8-10% living in Rio de Janeiro. History The Hungarian brothers João Carlos and Francisco Hofbauer (Portuguese written) came to Brazil from the city of Győr in 1826, escaping from political persecution. By the time they arrived in Brazil, they changed their surnames from Hofbauer to Hungria (Hungary, in Portuguese), founding the Hungria family in Brazil. There is also the former Hungarian Baptist Church, that recently changed its name to Igreja Batista Metropolitana, in the Lapa neighborhood of São Paulo, on Pio XI street. Brazil–Hungary relations refers to the diplomatic relations between the Federative Republic of Brazil and Hungary. Both nations enjoy friendly relations, the importance of which centres on the history of Hungarian immigration to Brazil. Rafael Marques Lusvarghi (born November 14, 1984) is a Hungarian Brazilian former military, activist and policeman. After serving in the French Foreign Legion, the Brazilian Military Police and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, he became nationally known in Brazil for his arrest during the 2014 FIFA World Cup protests, afterwards roaming to the Luhansk People's Republic, where he fought for infantry and became a senior lieutenant for the Prizrak Brigade. After having returned to Brazil, he was arrested during a layover in Ukraine and condemned to thirteen years in prison in counts of terrorism and formation of an illegal paramilitary unit. Paulo Rónai ( hu, Rónai Pál; 13 April 1907 - 1 December 1992) was a Hungarian-Brazilian translator, philologist, and critic. Biography Rónai Pál was born in the Hungarian capital Budapest into a Jewish family. He completed his primary studies in his native country, but also studied in France and Italy before transferring to Brazil due to World War II. There, he developed friendly relations with Aurélio Buarque de Holanda Ferreira - with whom he signed several works -, Cecília Meireles, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Guimarães Rosa, among others.
