Gabon At The 2012 Summer Olympics
Gabon competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's ninth appearance at the Olympics; the nation did not participate at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, affected by the African and the American-led boycott, respectively. The Gabon Olympic Committee (french: Comité Olympique Gabonais) sent the nation's largest delegation ever to the Games. A total of 24 athletes, 22 men and 2 women, competed in 5 sports. Men's football was the only team sport in which Gabon was represented at these Olympic games. Sprinter Ruddy Zang Milama was the nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Bahri Tanrıkulu (born March 16, 1980 in Ankara, Turkey) is a Turkish taekwondo practitioner, who competed in the Men's 80 kg division at the 2004 Summer Olympics held in Athens, Greece and won the silver medal. He studied at Akdeniz University. He is Turkey's first World and European Taekwondo champion. He was a member of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Sports Club before he transferred to Kocaeli Büyükşehir Belediyesi Kağıt Spor Kulübü. Robelis Despaigne (born 9 August 1988, Santiago de Cuba) is a Cuban taekwondo practitioner. He won the bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the +80 kg event. Kaino Thomsen-Fuataga (born 12 May 1991) is a Samoan sportsman who has represented his country in taekwondo and rugby union. He competed in the +80 kg event at the 2012 Summer Olympics; he was defeated by Anthony Obame in the preliminary round and was eliminated by Robelis Despaigne in the repechage contest. Abigél Joó (born 6 August 1990 in Budapest, Hungary) is a Hungarian judoka. Joó won the 2010 European Championships in the -78 kg event, and regained her title in 2012. Since then, she has won three bronze medals in 2013, 2014 and 2017. As a junior, she had won bronze medals at the world junior championships in 2008 and 2009, in the 70 kg division.
