Dexter is a city in Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 4,067 at the 2010 census. Dexter Township is located to the northwest and does not border the city, and the two are administered autonomously. The township and city are named for Samuel William Dexter, the founder of the village and the first circuit judge of Washtenaw County. History The area was first settled in 1824, 13 years before Michigan became a state, when land speculator Samuel W. Dexter purchased a large tract of land and originated the village. Dexter is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 3,803 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Bangor metropolitan statistical area. Dexter Regional High School, which serves Dexter as well as other nearby small towns, is located in the town. History Dexter was settled beginning in 1801 by Ebenezer Small, David Smith, and others from New Hampshire, and was originally called Elkinstown. When incorporated as a town in 1816, it named itself after Judge Samuel Dexter, who was then running for governor of Massachusetts (of which Maine was still a part). Dexter is a city in Stoddard County, Missouri, United States, founded in 1873. The population was 7,864 at the 2010 census. History Dexter was platted in 1873. Mr. Dex, an early settler, gave the community the name of his horse, Dexter. Dexter experienced rapid growth with the arrival of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. ''Dexter'' is a five-issue limited series comic book written by Jeff Lindsay, painted by Dalibor Talajic and published by Marvel Comics in 2013. It is based on Lindsay's popular Dexter novels. Publication history Marvel Comics announced the Dexter comics in November 2012. The series was penned by Jeff Lindsay, the creator of the original Dexter series, and illustrated by Dalibor Talajic. Dexter is a city in Cowley County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 224. History The first post office at Dexter was established in July, 1870. Dexter was platted in 1875. Dexter is named for a trotting horse belonging to Robert Bonner of New York. Early in the 20th century Dexter became the focus of research that would confirm the existence of an abundance of naturally occurring and readily available helium. In May 1903, a newly drilled natural gas well was found to contain a nonflammable gas. Researchers at the University of Kansas found the “Dexter gas” contained only 15 percent methane and 72 percent nitrogen, causing the gas to be nonflammable. In addition they discovered helium within an “inert residue” in the gas and, after expanding their research to other wells throughout Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, published a paper in 1907 saying that helium could be extracted from natural gas.
