Catumbela
Catumbela is a city and municipality of the Benguela province in Angola. The municipality had a population of 175,805 in 2014. History In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Portuguese built ''Forte de São Pedro'' to establish themselves in Benguela. Today, the fort is in a dilapidated condition, but plans are being made to restore it and turn it into a museum. Catumbela was a commune in the municipality of Lobito until 2011, when it became a municipality in its own right. Catumbela Airport is an airport in Catumbela, a coastal city in the Benguela Province of Angola. History After having been expanded and restored, the airport opened in 2012 and due to its capacity and size, would indicate annual passenger movement of around 2.2 million. Cutumbela Airport will form an alternative to the airport in Luanda. The national certification process for Benguela Province's Catumbela airport is expected to be completed in February 2019, providing that the security standards complies with the 'Empresa Nacional de Navegação Aérea' regarding the infrastructure. Lobito
Lobito is a municipality in Angola. It is located in Benguela Province, on the Atlantic Coast north of the Catumbela Estuary. The Lobito municipality had a population of 393,079 in 2014. History The city was founded in 1843 and owes its existence to the bay of the same name having been chosen as the sea terminus of the Benguela railway to the far interior, passing through Luau to Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The city is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The population of the municipality is 393,079 (2014) in an area of 3,648 km². The municipality consists of the communes Canjala, Egipto Praia and Lobito. Benguela ( umb, Luombaka Volupale) is a province of Angola, situated in the west of the country. It lies on the Atlantic Ocean, and borders the provinces of Cuanza Sul, Namibe, Huila, and Huambo. The province has an area of and its capital is Benguela. According to the 2014 census, there were 2,231,385 inhabitants in the province. The current governor of Benguela is Isaac dos Anjos. A Portuguese attempt to contact the rulers of Benguela failed in 1587. As of 1600 the ruler of Benguela was Hombi a Njimbe (sometimes Anglacized as Hombiangymbe). Rail Transport In Angola
Rail transport in Angola consists of three separate Cape gauge lines that do not connect: the northern Luanda Railway, the central Benguela Railway, and the southern Moçâmedes Railway (southern). The lines each connect the Atlantic coast to the interior of the country. A fourth system once linked Gunza and Gabala but is no longer operational. History Railway construction began in Angola in 1887, while the country was a colony of Portugal. The Luanda Railway opened in 1889, the Moçâmedes Railway opened in 1910, and the Benguela Railway opened in 1912. The railways continued to be extended inland until 1961, when the Moçâmedes Railway reached Menongue. After Angola attained its independence from Portugal in 1975, the Angolan Civil War broke out and lasted until 2002.
