Aris Thessaloniki Women's Basketball
Aris Thessaloniki Women's Basketball is the women's basketball department of Aris Thessaloniki, the Greek multi-sport club based in Thessaloniki. The club plays in A2 Ethniki Women's Basketball, A2 Ethniki (2nd tier) but recently it has played in Greek Women's Basketball League, A1 Ethniki. In 2015-2016 season is on the first place of the second category. History The women's team of Aris was founded in 1946 thanks to initiatives of Phaedon Matthaiou. Some years later, the club ceased their activities but returned in the 1980s. The season 2009-10 played in Greek Women's Basketball League, A1 Ethniki for first time and the next season played in EuroCup Women but disqualified by Dynamo Novosibirsk. In season 2013-14, Aris finished in 7th place but withdrew from the championship due to financial problems and relegated to A2 Ethniki. Greek Women's Basketball League
The Greek women's Basketball League, also known as A1 Ethniki (A1 National) Women's Basketball is the most important competition of Greek women's professional basketball. It is organised by the EOK (Hellenic Basketball Federation). It began with the 1967–68 season. The first championship of the league, which was held in the 1967–68 season, was organised by ΕΟΑΠ (Greek: ''Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Αθλοπαιδιών''). Two years later, the EOK assumed control of the competition. Iraklis Thessaloniki won the inaugural championship of the league, in the 1967–68 season. From 1976 to 1999, Sporting Athens dominated the competition, winning 20 championships in that period (they also won another championship in 2004). So far, Sporting has won the most league championships (21 in total). From 2008 to 2012, Athinaikos dominated exclusively, breaking the record of consecutive wins in the Greek Women's League. The Greek Women's Basketball Cup is the national women's basketball cup competition of Greece. It began with the 1995–96 season, and it is organised by the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK). So far, eleven clubs have won the cup. Most of them are based in the Athens Urban Area. Alexandreio Melathron Nick Galis Hall (Greek language, Greek: Αλεξάνδρειο Μέλαθρον, Σάλα Νίκος Γκάλης) is an indoor arena, indoor sports arena that is located in Thessaloniki, Greece. Faidon Matthaiou, also spelled Fedon Mattheou and Phaedon Mathaiou ( el, Φαίδων Ματθαίου) (12 July 1924 – 17 September 2011) was a Greek professional basketball player and coach. He was a center at the start of his career, and at the end of his career, he also played as a point guard. He wore the number 1 jersey throughout his career. He represented Greece twice at the Summer Olympics. As a rower at the 1948 Summer Olympics, and as a basketball player at the 1952 Summer Olympics. Faidon Matthaiou is widely considered to be the Patriarch of Greek basketball.
