Alpha Sigma Tau (known as or Alpha Tau) is a national sorority founded on November 4, 1899, at Eastern Michigan University (formerly Michigan State Normal College). A member of the National Panhellenic Conference, the sorority has 83 active collegiate chapters at colleges and universities around the U.S. and over 65,000+ lifetime members. Terri Lea Britt ( née Utley; born 1961) is an American beauty queen, actress, television personality, author and motivational speaker from Arkansas who was crowned Miss USA in 1982. Early life As a young woman, Britt was involved in the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program. She was also vice-president of the Cabot High School class of 1980. Miss USA Britt won her first major pageant title, Miss Arkansas USA, in early 1982. She went on to win the title Miss USA in the nationally televised pageant held in Biloxi, Mississippi in May 1982. She was twenty years old at the time. Britt went on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant in Lima, Peru in July of the same year. Miss USA 2005 was the 54th Miss USA pageant, held in Baltimore, Maryland on April 11, 2005. It was won by Chelsea Cooley of North Carolina. Fifty-one state titleholders competed for the title of Miss USA in the Hippodrome Theatre on April 11, 2005. The hosts were ''Access Hollywood'' stars Nancy O'Dell and Billy Bush. Miss Arkansas USA, previously known as Miss Arkansas Universe, is the beauty pageant that selects the representative for the state of Arkansas in the Miss USA pageant, and the name of the title held by that winner. The pageant is directed by Vanbros and Associates. The current Miss Arkansas USA is Rylie Wagner of Ozark, Arkansas and was crowned on April 10, 2022. Michigan Women's Hall Of Fame
The Michigan Women's Hall of Fame (MWHOF) honors distinguished women, both historical and contemporary, who have been associated with the U.S. state of Michigan. The hall of fame was founded in 1983 by Gladys Beckwith and is sponsored by the Michigan Women's Studies Association. The formation of the Association and the Hall was prompted by five professors from Michigan State University, who were teaching a Women in American Society course. Nominations to the hall of fame are accepted from the public and are open to women who rose to prominence or were born in Michigan, as well as those who have lived in the state for an extended period. A screening committee ranks the nominations by merit and a second committee makes the final determination, generally selecting eight to ten women annually for induction. Gwen Frostic (April 26, 1906 – April 25, 2001) born as Sara Gwendolen Frostic, was an American artist, entrepreneur, author, and Michigan Women's Hall of Fame inductee. A lifelong resident of Michigan, Frostic is known for her naturalist, Linocut block print artwork, created using Original Heidelberg Platten presses. Early life and education Gwen Frostic was born April 26, 1906 in Sandusky, Michigan to Sara (née Anderson) and Fred W. Frostic. Her parents had both been trained as teachers in Ypsilanti, Michigan. At the time of Frostic's birth, Fred was serving as school principal. One of seven children, Frostic had an older brother, Bill, and five younger siblings. Although precocious and already walking, at 8 months old, Frostic suffered a high fever from an unknown illness which then left her with lifelong symptoms similar to cerebral palsy. Mildred Alice Doran (10 May 1905 – 16 August 1927) was a Canadian aviation enthusiast who was the only woman to enter the Dole Air Race in 1927, created to be the first to fly from California to Hawaii. During the race, she and several other competitors disappeared. Early life and education Doran was born in Ontario to a Canadian father, William Doran, a farmer, and American mother, Minnie Doran. Girls Who Code (also known as GWC) is an international nonprofit organization that aims to support and increase the number of women in computer science. The organization works toward closing the gender employment difference in computing. They host a seven-week Summer Immersion Program, a two-week specialized Campus Program, after school Clubs, a college club, College Loops, and a ''New York Times'' best-selling Penguin 13-book series. Dress for Success is a global nonprofit organization that provides professional attire for low-income women, to help support their job-search and interview process. The organization was founded in 1997 by Nancy Lublin, and has since spread from Harlem, New York City, to almost 145 cities in the United States and twenty other countries.
