The species was described as ''Tinea abruptella'' by Thomas Vernon Wollaston in 1858. This name is preoccupied and the new name ''Trichophaga robinsoni'' was proposed by Reinhard Gaedike and Ole Karsholt in 2001.lepiforum.de
