In 1975, Mendus was appointed a lecturer in philosophy at the

. In 1986, she transferred to the Politics Department and was awarded the title Professor of Political Philosophy in 1995. Between 1995 and 2000, she was Director of the Morrell Studies in Toleration Programme at the University of York. She is a member of editorial boards of the ''British Journal of Political Science'', the '' Journal of Philosophy of Education'', and the '' Journal of Applied Philosophy''. Susan Mendus was called as an expert witness to the
