Learned Society Of Wales
The Learned Society of Wales (Welsh: Cymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru) is a learned society and charity that exists to "celebrate, recognise, preserve, protect and encourage excellence in all of the scholarly disciplines", and to serve the Welsh nation. The Learned Society of Wales is Wales's first and only all-embracing national scholarly academy. A registered charity, it was established and launched on 25 May 2010 at the National Museum of Wales and was granted a Royal Charter in 2015. The society is based in Cardiff. It is an independent, self-governing, pan-disciplinary, bilingual organisation operating throughout Wales. English Language
English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, with its earliest forms spoken by the inhabitants of early medieval England. National Museum Cardiff ( cy, Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Caerdydd) is a museum and art gallery in Cardiff, Wales. The museum is part of the wider network of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales. Entry is kept free by a grant from the Welsh Government; however, they do ask for donations throughout the museum. History The National Museum of Wales was founded in 1905, with its royal charter granted in 1907. Part of the bid for Cardiff to obtain the National Museum for Wales included the gift of the Cardiff Museum Collection, then known as "Welsh Museum of Natural History, Archaeology and Art," which was formally handed over in 1912. Meic Stephens
Meic Stephens (23 July 1938 – 2 July 2018) was a Welsh literary editor, journalist, translator, and poet. Birth and education Meic Stephens was born on 23 July 1938 in the village of Treforest, near Pontypridd, Glamorgan. He was educated at Pontypridd Boys' Grammar School and then studied at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, graduating in 1961, at the University of Rennes, Brittany, and the University College of North Wales, Bangor, Gwynedd. Career From 1962 to 1966 he taught French at Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire. In Merthyr Tydfil he established the Triskel Press and in 1965 he began the periodical, '' Poetry Wales''. Noel Lloyd
Noel Lloyd (26 December 1946 – 7 June 2019) was a Welsh academic, who served as Vice-Chancellor of Aberystwyth University from 2004 to his retirement in 2011. Biography Noel Lloyd began his academic career at the University of Cambridge, moving to Aberystwyth University in 1975 and subsequently becoming Professor of Mathematics, Dean of Science, Pro Vice-Chancellor and, from 1999 to 2004, Registrar and Secretary. He was awarded a CBE in the Birthday Honours List in 2010 for services to Higher Education in Wales. On his retirement in 2011, he was elected to the Learned Society of Wales. John Davies (historian)
John Davies (25 April 1938 – 16 February 2015) was a Welsh historian, and a television and radio broadcaster. He attended university at Cardiff and Cambridge and taught Welsh at Aberystwyth. He wrote a number of books on Welsh history. Education Davies was born in the Rhondda, Wales, and studied at both University College, Cardiff, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Life and work Davies was married with four children. In later life he acknowledged that he was bisexual. After teaching Welsh history at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, he retired to Cardiff, and appeared frequently as a presenter and contributor to history programmes on television and radio. Sir Emyr Jones Parry (born 21 September 1947) is a British retired diplomat. He is a former Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations and former UK Permanent Representative on the North Atlantic Council.
