Peter Hoar

Peter Hoar is a BAFTA award-winning British Director and Executive Producer of film and television, known for his work on Netflix's '' Daredevil'', ''The Umbrella Academy'', ''Doctor Who'' and ''It's A Sin''.

Career

Peter studied Media Production at Bournemouth University in 1989, graduating in 1992. After working on the BAFTAs and British Comedy Awards in his final year before graduating, Peter realised he wanted to get into drama.

Hoar started out as a runner on Peak Practice, where he worked up to six years, working his way up the ladder to location manager and trainee director. He went on to direct on Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, before moving into series dramas such as Wire in the Blood, The Innocence Project and Spooks.

As director

In 2011, Hoar's episode of Doctor Who - A Good Man Goes to War, with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, debuted as the mid-season finale. Directing Doctor Who marked a life-long ambition for Hoar, after being inspired by the show as a ten year old realising "it was somebody's job to make that show." Doctor Who would make another appearance in one of Hoar's later projects, It's A Sin, where the lead character becomes an extra on the TV show in the 1980's.

Peter Hoar then directed 9 episodes of Da Vinci’s Demons, created by The Dark Knight story writer David S. Goyer. The show followed Leonardo da Vinci during his early days as an artist and inventor, trying to change the future.

In 2016 Hoar made his Marvel debut directing three episodes of Daredevil for Netflix, with Charlie Cox in the leading role. The show marked Peter's first formal American TV credit, and the beginning of a long relationship with Marvel's television division. He went on to direct an episode of Iron Fist, Runaways, Cloak & Dagger, and The Defenders - working with screen icon Sigourney Weaver.

Peter continued working with Netflix, bringing two episodes of Kalogridis' Altered Carbon to the screen, starring Chris Conner. He later directed the first episode and finale of The Umbrella Academy season 1, based on the Dark Horse comic; marking his sixth comic book property adaptation for television.

It's A Sin

2021 saw the debut of Channel 4’s drama It's A Sin, directed by Peter Hoar and written by Russell T Davies, telling the story of a group of close friends through the 1980's AIDs crisis, starring Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander. The importance of authentic casting and crewing of gay and queer actors and creatives became a pivotal talking point in the success of the series, with Peter and Russell often discussing this as a true asset for the show.

In March 2022 It's A Sin led the charge with 11 nominations for the BAFTA Television Awards, with a nomination for Peter as Best Director of Fiction, and Best Mini Series amongst them.

Peter was awarded winner of the 2022 BAFTA Award for Directing:Fiction at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on 24 April 2022.

In late 2021 it was announced that Hoar would be re-teaming with Russell T Davies to direct a new 3-part series '' Nolly'' starring Helena Bonham Carter. Carter will play real-life actress Noele Gordon (Nolly), who was one of the most famous faces on British television in the 1970s.

The Last of Us (HBO)

Peter was confirmed to be directing an episode of the long-anticipated live action adaptation series in a filing by the Directors Guild of Canada in July 2021.

For #TLoUDay (The Last of Us Day) 2021, game director Neil Druckmann and Peter Hoar shared a first look image of the upcoming HBO live action adaptation - with a still from Hoar's episode.

On 6 October 2021, Hoar took to Instagram to mark his last day on The Last of Us, sharing an image of the episode clapper board.

Awards

Peter Hoar is nominated for Best Director: Fiction at the upcoming 2022 BAFTA Television Awards, for his work on It's A Sin. His series is also nominated for 10 more awards at the same ceremony. The BAFTA nominations came the day after the show picked up three Royal Television Society awards at their Programme Awards Ceremony; including winning Best Limited Series.

2022 also saw Peter nominated for Best New Scripted Series at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, alongside series creator Russell T Davies and producer Nicola Schindler. Hoar also picked up Best Limited Series at the Critics' Choice Awards, Best Drama at the BPG Awards, Outstanding TV or Limited Series at the GLAAD Media Awards and Best Mini Series at the Satellite Awards.

Peter and the It's A Sin team also won eleven awards in 2021, the year of the series debut, including Program of the Year at the Banff Rockie Awards, Best Series at the Monte-Carlo and Venice Television Awards, and Best Drama at the National Television Awards. The series was also recognised by BAFTA Cymru, with three nominations.

In 2012 Hoar was nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, for his episode of Doctor Who: A Good Man Goes to War, a nomination shared with series writer and show runner Steven Moffat.
