To resolve this paraphyly the genera '' Rhencus'' and '' Rhonciscus'' were revived with the eastern Pacific species ''P. maacrocanthus'' and ''P. panamensis'' being placed in ''Rhencus'' while ''Rhonicus'' contains the eastern Pacific species ''P. bayanus'' and the western Atlantic species ''P. crocro''.
