Mound Township was one of the original four created when the county was organized in 1827.

According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of , of which (or 98.69%) is land and (or 1.31%) is water. The town of Foster is located just north of U.S. Route 136, about east of the township's southwestern border. Extinct communities in the township include
