The airport was constructed in July 1943 as RCAF Station Masset. It was built by the

(registration C-GPCG) hit a deer whilst taking off on Runway 13 on flight 8P902 to Vancouver. The aircraft rejected the takeoff safely and returned to the terminal. No occupants of the aircraft were injured, but the left propeller and engine received substantial damage. The aircraft was repaired and returned to service.
