Masset Airport
Masset Airport is located northeast of Masset, British Columbia, Canada. In 2008 the airport began services using a 737 jet. History The airport was constructed in July 1943 as RCAF Station Masset. It was built by the RCAF's No. 9 Construction Maintenance Unit. The original landing strip was a perforated steel plate runway, which was built in a record breaking 14 days. At the end of World War II RCAF Station Masset was surplus to requirements, so in 1945 it was mothballed. CFS Masset a radio relay station, was built adjacent to RCAF Station Masset in 1942. Masset , formerly ''Massett'', is a village in Haida Gwaii in British Columbia, Canada. It is located on Masset Sound on the northern coast of Graham Island, the largest island in the archipelago, and is approximately west of mainland British Columbia. It is the primary western terminus of Trans-Canada Highway 16 (the Yellowhead Highway) and is served by Masset Airport, with flights to Vancouver and Prince Rupert. During the maritime fur trade of the early 19th century, Masset was a key trading site. It was incorporated as a village municipality on May 11, 1961. The Saab 340 is a Swedish twin-engine turboprop aircraft designed and initially produced by Saab AB and Fairchild Aircraft. It is designed to seat 30-36 passengers and, as of July 2018, there were 240 operational aircraft used by 34 different operators. The Learjet Model 35 and Model 36 are a series of American multi-role business jets and military transport aircraft manufactured by Learjet. When used by the United States Air Force they carry the designation C-21A. The aircraft are powered by two Garrett TFE731-2 turbofan engines. Its cabin can be arranged for six to eight passengers. The longer-range Model 36 has a shortened passenger area to provide more space in the aft fuselage for fuel tanks. The engines are mounted in nacelles on the sides of the aft fuselage. The station was officially stood-down on 1 April 1997 and re-established as Canadian Forces Station Leitrim Detachment Masset. History Naval Radio Station Masset (1943 - 1968) The station was constructed in 1942 as Naval Radio Station (NRS) Masset and became active on 23 February 1943. NRS Masset was used as a high-frequency direction finding (HFDF) intercept station and a relay station for ship-to-shore communications.
