There are a large number of tunnels in the
Alps The Alps () ; german: Alpen ; it, Alpi ; rm, Alps ; sl, Alpe . are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe, stretching approximately across seven Alpine countries (from west to east): France, Sw ...
of Central Europe. They have the advantage of providing shorter routes and faster journey times by avoiding narrow, winding routes over mountain passes which may well be affected by winter conditions. This list is intended to give an overview of the main Alpine tunnels. As the list is "country" oriented, cross-border tunnels are listed twice (e.g. the Mont Blanc tunnel is listed under France and under Italy.)
