LSWR X6 Class
The LSWR X6 class was a class of express passenger 4-4-0 steam locomotives designed for the London and South Western Railway by William Adams (locomotive engineer), William Adams. Ten were constructed at Nine Elms Locomotive Works between 1895 and 1896. The class were numbered 657–666, and just as the LSWR T3 class, T3 class were a smaller-wheeled version of the LSWR X2 class, X2 class, the X6 class were a smaller-wheeled version of the LSWR T6 class, T6 class. The boiler was identical to that used the T6 class. Some of the engines were subsequently fitted with a Drummond boiler, including No. 658 which was the last Adams 4-4-0 to remain in service. All passed to the Southern Railway (UK), Southern Railway at the Railways Act 1921, grouping in 1923. Withdrawals started in 1933, and by the start of World War II, only six remained. William Adams (locomotive Engineer)
William Adams (15 October 1823 – 7 August 1904) was an English railway engineer. He was the Locomotive Superintendent of the North London Railway from 1858 to 1873; the Great Eastern Railway from 1873 until 1878 and the London and South Western Railway from then until his retirement in 1895. He is best known for his steam locomotive, locomotives featuring the ''Adams bogie'', a device with lateral centring springs (initially made of rubber) to improve high-speed stability. He should not be mistaken for William Bridges Adams (1797–1872) a locomotive engineer who, confusingly, invented the ''Adams axle'' – a radial axle that William Adams incorporated in designs for the London and South Western Railway. The Railways Act 1921 ( 11 & 12 Geo. 5. c. 55), also known as the Grouping Act, was an act of Parliament enacted by the British government, and was intended to stem the losses being made by many of the country's 120 railway companies, by "grouping" them into four large companies, dubbed the " Big Four". Ian Allan Publishing was an English publisher, established in 1942, which specialised in transport books. It was founded by Ian Allan. Nine Elms Locomotive Works
Nine Elms Locomotive Works were built in 1839 by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) adjoining their passenger terminus near the Vauxhall end of Nine Elms Lane, in the district of Nine Elms in the London Borough of Battersea. They were rebuilt in 1841 and remained the principal locomotive carriage and wagon workshops of the railway until closure in stages between 1891 and 1909. Thereafter a large steam motive power depot remained open on the site until 1967, serving Waterloo railway station. The LSWR T6 class was a class of express passenger 4-4-0 steam locomotives designed for the London and South Western Railway by William Adams. Ten were constructed at Nine Elms Locomotive Works between 1885 and 1886. The class were numbered 677–686, and were a development of the X2 class, based on experience gained with the locomotives in traffic. LSWR X2 Class
The LSWR X2 class was a class of express passenger 4-4-0 steam locomotives designed for the London and South Western Railway by William Adams. Twenty were constructed at Nine Elms Locomotive Works between 1890 and 1892. The class were numbered 577–596, and were an enlarged version of the 460 class. Adams had designed his drivered locomotives for the London to Bournemouth route, while the drivered locomotives were intended for the London to Salisbury route which had more severe gradients.
