History

The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1563, but the church was likely built during the 14th century. The first church was a stave church that was located at Sævik, about to the north of the present church site. Records from 1639 state that the church was very small and fragile, in need of supports for the exterior walls so they would not collapse in a storm. Shortly afterwards, around the year 1640, the

was expanded. In 1705, the old church was torn down and replaced with a new, larger church on the same site. In 1863, a new church was built in the village of Klinga, about to the south of the historic church site. The new church was
