Ellis began his career with Sheffield Wednesday, making his professional debut in March 1955 against

. However, due to the form of Roy Shiner, he found first-team chances limited in his first few season before becoming a regular following the appointment of Harry Catterick as manager. His most prolific season at the club came in 1960–61, scoring 19 times including a hattrick during a 7–2 victory over
