Born in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, João Garcia started practicing mountaineering in 1982 (15 years old), when he travelled to

João, Bruno and Rui reached the summit on 31 October. Tragically, Bruno fell to his death during the descent. On 20 July 2007 João reached the summit of K2, the second highest mountain in the world, making his ninth successful ascent of 8000+ mountains. It was a memorable, tough climb, with several expeditions getting together for the summit push. As always, João was one of the very few that did not use supplemental oxygen during the climb.
