Horst Stöcker studied physics, chemistry, mathematics and philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität, Frankfurt am Main, where he got his Dr. phil.nat. in 1979. He went on to GSI and – as a DAAD – postdoctoral fellow – to LBL,
