to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses (March 4, 1871 – March 3, 1875). While in Washington, he was largely responsible for the refusal of patent extension resulting in the overthrow of the Sewing Machine monopoly. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1874 to the Forty-fourth Congress. He resumed the practice of law and served as member of the State constitutional convention in 1918. He died in Claremont, New Hampshire, August 21, 1922, and was interred in Mountain View Cemetery.
