He would close his regular racing career in 1975, as the popularity of gassers faded, switching to driving a turbocharged Ford Pinto, but only occasionally, until 1986. In 2000, he and his son, Gregg, were refurbishing Buick V6 engines used in Indy Lights racing. Montgomery was also inducted to the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame.
