Gregory stayed at West Ham after ending his playing career, and went on to coach the reserves, and then the first team, and helped with team administration. He finally left the club in May 1987, after a 51-year association with the Irons. Gregory died on 21 January 2012 in a nursing home in

, after a period of ill health, following a stroke in 2010. He was predeceased by his wife, Yvonne and a daughter. In a tribute former West Ham goalkeeper Phil Parkes said, "''He was a legend, pure and simple. I don't think we will ever see his like again. He was a one-club man, a player, a coach, a manager and he has to be the greatest servant that West Ham ever had''."
