Eduard Swoboda (14 November 1814, in Vienna – 13 September 1902, in Hallstatt) was an Austrian portrait, history and genre painter. His younger brother, Rudolf, was a landscape and animal painter.


Biography

His father was a wool merchant. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, with

. Two of the children from his second marriage, Rudolf and Josefine, also became artists. He died while vacationing near Salzkammergut and was interred at the Wiener Zentralfriedhof. A large cycle of portraits of artists living in Vienna became very popular, through a series of lithographs. Some of his best known works are frescoes; including wall paintings at churches in Trumau, Reichenau and Schemnitz. He also restored frescoes in the Great Orangery at
