History

The union was founded in 1924 as a section of the
Iron and Steel Trades Confederation The Iron and Steel Trades Confederation (ISTC) was a British trade union for metal-workers and allied groups, being the largest union in these fields. It was formed on 1 January 1917 as a merger of existing steel-workers' unions and it is now pa ...
(ISTC). It left the ISTC and became an independent union in 1930. In 1971, the union merged with the Amalgamated Union of Engineering and Foundry Workers to form the
Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers The Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU) was a major British trade union. It merged with the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications and Plumbing Union to form the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union in 1992. History The history of t ...
, becoming the largely autonomous construction section of the new union.
