Bothwell (UK Parliament Constituency)
Bothwell was a county constituency in Lanarkshire represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1918 to 1983. It was formed by the division of Lanarkshire constituency. Boundaries From 1918 the constituency consisted of "The part of the Middle Ward County District which is contained within the parishes of Old Monkland and Bothwell, exclusive of all burghs or portions of burghs situated therein." The Representation of the People Act 1948 provided that the constituency was to consist of "The sixth district, the electoral divisions of Baillieston, Mount Vernon and Carmyle, Springboig and Garrowhill in the ninth district and that part of the electoral division of Old Monkland in the said ninth district which is bounded on the North by the city of Glasgow and the burgh of Coatbridge, on the West by the electoral division of Baillieston and on the South and East by the electoral divisions of Tannochside and Bellshill North."Representation of the ... North West Lanarkshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
North West Lanarkshire was a county constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (Westminster) from 1885 to 1918. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post voting system. Boundaries The name relates the constituency to the county of Lanark. 1935 United Kingdom General Election
The 1935 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 14 November 1935 and resulted in a large, albeit reduced, majority for the National Government now led by Stanley Baldwin of the Conservative Party. The greatest number of members, as before, were Conservatives, while the National Liberal vote held steady. The much smaller National Labour vote also held steady but the resurgence in the main Labour vote caused over a third of their MPs, including National Labour leader Ramsay MacDonald, to lose their seats. Labour, under what was then regarded internally as the caretaker leadership of Clement Attlee following the resignation of George Lansbury slightly over a month before, made large gains over their very poor showing at the 1931 general election, and saw their highest share of the vote yet. Helen Shaw (Unionist Politician)
Helen Brown Shaw, MBE (''née'' Graham; 2 June 1879 – 20 April 1964) was a Unionist Party politician in Scotland. Career Shaw was active during World War I, chairing charities such as the Lanarkshire Prisoners of War Relief Committee. She was made an MBE in 1920. In 1930, she was the first woman to be elected to Lanarkshire County Council. In the Conservative landslide of 1931, Shaw was elected Member of Parliament for the normally Labour seat of Bothwell. She held the seat until 1935, when it was regained by Labour. As an MP, she worked for improved condition in the Lanarkshire mines, and to bring new industries to the area. In 1938, she became district administrator of the WVS for air raid precautions, West of Scotland. Personal life Shaw was the daughter of Annie Gillespie and David Graham, born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 2 June 1879. She married Major David Shaw of the 6th Cameronians on 18 September 1879. Joseph Sullivan (MP)
Joseph Sullivan (8 September 1866 – 13 February 1935) was a Scotland, Scottish Labour Party (UK), Labour Party politician who served as a Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) from 1922 to 1924, and from 1926 to 1931. Born in Cambuslang, Sullivan was educated in Bellshill and Newton, South Lanarkshire, Newton, before becoming a coal miner. He became active in the Lanarkshire Miners' County Union, serving as its president, and as a full-time agent for the union. John Robertson (Bothwell MP)
John Robertson MBE (1867 – 14 February 1926) was a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. He began work in the coal mines as a boy of thirteen, eventually becoming Chairman of the Scottish Miners' Union. He was unsuccessful parliamentary candidate for the Bothwell constituency in Lanarkshire at the 1918 general election and was elected as Member of Parliament for the constituency in a 1919 by-election, holding the seat until his death. Unionist Party (Scotland)
The Unionist Party was the main centre-right political party in Scotland between 1912 and 1965. Independent of, although associated with, the Conservative Party in England and Wales, it stood for election at different periods of its history in alliance with a small number of Liberal Unionist and National Liberal candidates. David MacDonald (British Politician)
David Henderson MacDonald (c. 1857 – 22 June 1919) was briefly the Conservative MP for Bothwell in Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was elected MP for Bothwell at the 1918 General Election after defeating the Labour candidate John Robertson by 322 votes, becoming the first MP from Bothwell. MacDonald did not serve long as an MP, as he died in June 1919 (at age 61), after just 176 days in office. Robertson went on to win the ensuing by-election.
