. The design is based on Vakhushti Bagrationi's "Banner of Ossetia" which dates from 1735. Around the shield, the name of the country is written in Ossetian (''Республикӕ Хуссар Ирыстон'') above and in Russian (''Республика Южная Осетия'') below.
