McCarthy joined the Sarsfields club at a young age and played in all grades at juvenile and underage levels, experiencing Cork Minor Championship success in 2007. McCarthy made his first appearance with the Sarsfields senior team on 3 May 2008 in 2-09 to 2-08 defeat of

McCarthy first played for Cork at minor level on 29 July 2007 in a 2-19 to 0-08 All-Ireland quarter-final defeat of
