They are dark or black with shiny colourful reflections and can often be seen visiting flowers in damp marshy areas where the aquatic larvae live. Species in the related genera '' Melanogaster'', '' Orthonevra'', '' Lejogaster'' and '' Riponnensia'' were formerly treated as members of ''Chrysogaster''.
