The name ''Caja de Muertos'' (coffin) literally translates "dead man's chest" from Spanish. The coral reef area in the nature reserve is among the most expansive and most preserved in Puerto Rico. Most of the coral is found on the northeastern reefs along Caja de Muertos; it serves as home and nursery to numerous fish species.

Caja de Muertos can be reached by ferry from
