Early years

Thompson attended Richard Gahr High School where he was a standout in

and played but didn't start football, before moving on to Cerritos Junior College where he became a starter as a defensive tackle. He would later transfer to the
University of Kansas The University of Kansas (KU) is a public research university with its main campus in Lawrence, Kansas, United States, and several satellite campuses, research and educational centers, medical centers, and classes across the state of Kansas. T ...
on a football scholarship. As a junior, he was one of the starting defensive tackles. He missed most of his last year with a stress fracture in his ankle.
