The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is a public land-grant research university in Los Angeles, California. UCLA Bruins
The UCLA Bruins are the athletic teams that represent the University of California, Los Angeles. The Bruin men's and women's teams participate in NCAA Division I as part of the Pac-12 Conference and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Mountain Pacific Sports Federation
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) is a college athletic conference with members located mostly in the western United States, although it now has members as far east as Pennsylvania. The conference participates at the NCAA Division I level, primarily in Olympic sports that are not directly sponsored by a school's home conference (such as the Pac-12 and Big West, whose members all participate in MPSF competition in at least one of its sports). The ''Daily Bruin'' is the student newspaper at the University of California, Los Angeles. It began publishing in 1919, the year UCLA was founded. The ''Daily Bruin'' distributes about 6,000 copies across campus each school day. It also publishes ''PRIME'', a quarterly arts, culture and lifestyle magazine, and Bruinwalk.com, a professor, class and apartment review website. Westwood is a commercial and residential neighborhood in the northern central portion of the Westside region of Los Angeles, California. It is the home of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). UCLA Blue
UCLA Blue is the dark azure color used in association with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). It is described as a deep sky blue and is accompanied by a sun gold, UCLA Gold. Both are colloquially referred to as "blue and gold." UCLA Blue was approved by the Chancellor of UCLA in March 2004 for use by the school's academic and administrative units. Joe Bruin
Joe Bruin is the official mascot of UCLA with Josephine "Josie" Bruin, a female brown bear, who is his regular partner at UCLA sporting events and other university activities. History The earliest known UCLA mascot was a furry stray dog, known as Rags, that a gardener found on the campus of the Normal School in fall 1917. A brief "autobiography" of Rags was published in the ''Cub Californian'' in 1919, and he was mentioned in the Southern Campus yearbook until 1922. While the university used different bear-related nicknames in the 1920s, it settled on "Bruins" in 1928 and began renting live bears as mascots in the 1930s. Darnell Hunt (born 1962) is an American sociologist and academic administrator. As of September 1, 2022, Darnell Hunt is UCLA’s executive vice chancellor and provost. He has served as the dean of Social Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he is also a professor of Sociology and African American Studies, and the former director of the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies. He is the author or editor of four books, and annual reports on the lack of diversity in the film industry.
