Cornett was elected in 2004 to represent the 45th legislative district after finishing first in a five-person primary, and winning the general election with 60% of the 13,573 votes cast. In 2008, she ran for re-election unopposed. Cornett chaired the Revenue committee (Chairperson), and sat on the Education Committee, the Committee on Committees, and the Developmental Disabilities Special Investigative Committee, formed in 2007.
