Ülo Õun
Ülo Õun (30 April 1940 – 7 March 1988) was an Estonian sculptor whose career began in the late 1960s and came to prominence in the 1970s. Õun mainly worked as a portrait and figural sculptor and was known for his works in colored plaster and bronze. Early life and education Ülo Õun was born and raised in Tartu, one of two children of Ado and Alma Õun (''née'' Lellep). He graduated from Tartu Secondary School No. 2 (now, the Miina Härma Gymnasium) in 1958. Afterward, he studied mathematics at Tartu State University (now, the University of Tartu) for a year, before enrolling at the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR (now, the Estonian Academy of Arts) to study visual arts, with an emphasis on sculpting. Ãœlo Nugis
Ülo Nugis (28 April 1944 – 18 November 2011) was an Estonian politician and economist. As Speaker of the Supreme Council of Estonia on 20 August 1991, he presided over the Supreme Council's historic session when it voted for the restoration of Estonia's national independence from the Soviet Union. Early life Ülo Nugis was born on 28 April 1944 in Tallinn. He studied at Tallinn Technical Secondary School for Building and Mechanics from 1958 to 1962, at Tallinn Polytechnic Institute from 1962 to 1965, and finally at Belarusian State Polytechnic Institute from 1965 to 1967 graduating in mechanical engineering. Ülo Vinter (3 January 1934 in Tallinn – 2 July 2000 in Käsmu) was an Estonian composer. In 1951 he graduated from Tallinn Music High School in music theory. Afterwards he graduated from Tallinn State Conservatory in composition speciality. From 1956 to 1969 he was the music editor at Estonian Radio and from 1969 to 1986 at Eesti Telefilm. Ãœlo Sooster
Ãœlo Ilmar Sooster (October 17, 1924 in Ãœhtri, Käina Parish – October 25, 1970 in Moscow) was an Estonian nonconformist painter. Ãœlo Sooster was born the village of Ãœhtri on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa. He was the son of Johannes Sooster and Veera Sooster (''née'' Tatter) and had a sister, Meedi, two years younger. His father was later remarried to Linda Vahtras. He was educated at Tartu Art College where he studied surrealism during the years 1945–1949. In 1949, his studies were cut short when he was arrested and, like hundreds of thousands of other Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians, he was arrested and deported by the Soviet authorities to Gulag. Sooster was sentenced to ten years of hard labour in a Karaganda camp. In 1956, during the Khrushchev Thaw, he was released and 'rehabilitated' by denouncing Stalinism. Ülo Tootsen (13 June 1933 – 12 March 2006) was an Estonian biologist, journalist, publisher, editor, translator, and politician. He was a member of IX Riigikogu, representing the Estonian Centre Party. Tootsen was born in Varstu Parish (now, part of Rõuge Parish). His brother was journalist, writer and politician Toivo Tootsen. He graduated from Tartu State University in 1957 with a degree in zoology. Ülo Jõgi
Ülo Jõgi (12 March 1921, in Tallinn – 14 May 2007, in Tallinn) was an Estonian war historian who was active in the Estonian resistance against the Soviet occupation of Estonia. On 11 December 1944, Jõgi (former member of Erna long-range recce group, organized by Finnish Army together with Nazi Germany) was arrested by the Soviet authorities, accused of spying for UK. Months later, he was sent to a Gulag labor camp in the Komi Republic, to the west of the Ural mountains in the north-east of the East European Plain. He was exiled from the Estonian SSR for life, but was eventually released in 1970. He returned to Keila, Estonia, a year later. Ülo Lurymiste (30 June 1929 Vändra – 20 November 2017) was an Estonian mathematician. In 1952 he graduated from the University of Tartu in mathematics.
