Östermalmstorg
Östermalmstorg is a square in the district of Östermalm, in Stockholm, Sweden. It is known principal for Östermalm Market Hall (''Östermalmshallen'') which first opened in 1889. Östermalmshallen's interior is a marketplace for food and related delicacies. Östermalmstorg was also the location of the first Åhléns department store which opened in 1932. Next to the square stands the statue of ''The Meeting'' (Swedish: "Möte"), showing a naked male figure bearing a piece of meat on his shoulders before a recumbent female figure, created by the artist Willy Gordon (1918–2003). Östermalmstorg Metro Station
Östermalmstorg metro station is station on the red line of the Stockholm metro, located in the district of Östermalm. The station was opened on 16 May 1965 as the 59th station in the Stockholm system as the north terminus of the extension from T-Centralen. On 2 September 1967, the line was extended northeast to Ropsten. On 30 September 1973, another extension, north to Tekniska högskolan, was opened. The platform is approximately below the surface. It is located in the city center, making it one of the most-used stations in the system, with approximately 38,550 people travelling from the station on an average workday. The station was built by the cut-and-cover method and formed the first part of the extension of the red line north of T-Centralen. Nearby stations include Stadion (T14) and Karlaplan. Willy Gordon
Willy Gordon (July 2, 1918 – July 12, 2003) was a Swedish sculptor and artist. Gordon's public artworks are displayed in a number of cities in Sweden. Life Gordon was born at Ringen in the Russian gubernia of Courland (present day , Ruba Parish, Saldus Municipality, Latvia) and later emigrated with his family to Malmö, Sweden when he was seven years old. He studied sculpture by Nils Sjögren, at the Royal University College of Fine Arts ( sv, Konsthögskolan) in Stockholm and later with Ossip Zadkine in Paris. Art Public sculptures Gordon was active in Stockholm for a major part of his life, and there about a dozen of his public sculptures can be found. Östermalm
Östermalm (; "Eastern city-borough") is a 2.56 km2 large district in central Stockholm, Sweden. With 71,802 inhabitants, it is one of the most populous districts in Stockholm. It is an extremely expensive area, having the highest housing prices in Sweden. History During the reign of the ruler of all of Scandinavia, king Eric of Pomerania in the early 15th century, a royal cowshed/barn was erected on the lands of the village Vädla. Since the town of Stockholm had grown and started to encroach on the borders of that village, there were many complaints about animals causing damage in the town. Åhléns () is a chain of Swedish department stores. With locations in almost every city in the country, including 18 in Stockholm alone , it is the fourth largest group of fashion stores in Sweden. History Åhléns began as a mail order business. It was created in 1899 by Johan Petter Åhlén and Erik Holm, in the little town of Insjön in the province of Dalarna.
