Éditions Rencontre
Éditions Rencontre (Meeting Editions) was a left wing publishing house in Francophone Switzerland founded in Lausanne in 1950. In 1970 they sold 6 million books globally to the Francophone world. Éditions Rencontre was founded as a co-operative society on 16 June 1950. It was founded with the aim of establishing ''La revue Rencontre'', a youth culture magazine despite the founders having no experience in the publishing world. However it became one of the most important book clubs in Europe. Swiss Literature
As there is no dominant national language, the four main languages of French, Italian, German and Romansch form the four branches which make up a literature of Switzerland. The original Swiss Confederation, from its foundation in 1291 up to 1798, gained only a few French-speaking districts in what is now the Canton of Fribourg, and so the German language dominated. During that period the Swiss vernacular literature was in German, although in the 18th century, French became fashionable in Bern and elsewhere. At that time, Geneva and Lausanne were not yet Swiss: Geneva was an ally and Vaud a subject land. The French branch does not really begin to qualify as Swiss writing until after 1815, when the French-speaking regions gained full status as Swiss cantons. Louis Guilloux
Louis Guilloux (15 January 1899 – 14 October 1980) was a French writer born in Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, where he lived throughout his life. He is known for his Social Realist novels describing working class life and political struggles in the mid-twentieth century. His best-known book is '' Le Sang noir'' (Blood Dark), which has been described as a "prefiguration of Sartre's '' La Nausée''." Life and work Guilloux's father was a shoemaker and socialist activist, a background that Guilloux describes in his first book ''La Maison du Peuple'' (The House of the People), which centres on the struggles of a shoemaker called Quéré as seen through the eyes of his young son. The story describes how Quéré's idealistic political activism threatens his small business as he loses custom by pushing against ingrained conservatism. Pierre Balthasar De Muralt
Pierre Balthasar de Muralt (1921, Vevey, – 24 March 2013, Vevey) was a Swiss typographer and publisher. He was responsible for developing Éditions Rencontre into one of the largest francophone book clubs in the world. He was a descendant of the Sulzer family who founded Sulzer Ltd. in the nineteenth century. He completed his military service and gained a Law doctorate at the University of Lausanne before studying typographer in Paris. Yves Velan
Yves Velan, (29 August 1925 in Saint-Quentin, Aisne – 6 May 2017) was a Swiss writer from Bassins. Biography He studied literature at Lausanne, where he joined the Society of Belles Lettres, and worked two years as a reader at the University of Florence. In 1950 he was one of the founders the leftist co-operative publishing house, Éditions Rencontre which published the literary magazine ''La revue Rencontre''. A communist, he was a member of the Swiss Party of Labour from the end of the war until 1957. He was forbidden to work and was excluded from teaching in the Canton of Vaud. He then moved to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchâtel where he taught literature at the gymnasium until his retirement in 1991. In the late sixties he temporarily left the Neuchâtel Jura for a long stay in the United States where he taught French literature at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.
