Ã…land ( fi, Ahvenanmaa: ; ; ) is an Federacy, autonomous and Demilitarized zone, demilitarised region of Finland since 1920 by a decision of the League of Nations. It is the smallest region of Finland by area and population, with a size of 1,580 km2, and a population of 30,129, constituting 0.51% of its land area and 0.54% of its population. Its only official language is Swedish language, Swedish and the capital city is Mariehamn. Ã…land is situated in an archipelago, called the Ã…land Islands, at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea belonging to Finland. The Lagting, or ''Lagtinget'', is the parliament of Åland, an autonomous, demilitarised and unilingually Swedish-speaking territory of Finland. The Lagting has 30 seats, which makes for approximately one seat per 700 voters in 2022. Legislative work is carried out in three standing committees: * Committee on Legal Affairs and Culture * Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs * Committee on Social Affairs and the Local Environment Electoral system The 30 members of the Parliament of Åland are elected every four years by proportional representation, with seats allocated using the d'Hondt method. Mariehamn
Mariehamn ( , ; fi, Maarianhamina ; la, Portus Mariae) is the capital of Ã…land, an autonomous territory under Finnish sovereignty. Mariehamn is the seat of the Government and Parliament of Ã…land, and 40% of the population of Ã…land live in the city. It is mostly surrounded by Jomala, the second largest municipality in Ã…land in terms of population; to the east it is bordered by Lemland. Like all of Ã…land, Mariehamn is unilingually Swedish-speaking and around of the inhabitants speak it as their native language. Veronica Thörnroos (born 16 July 1962) is a Finnish politician from Åland. She currently serves as the Premier of Åland, a position she has held since 25 November 2019. Prior to entering politics, Thörnroos worked as a nurse. Political career Thörnroos' political career began in 1989 when she was elected to the Brändö municipal council. She became a representative of the Provincial Assembly in 2003. In 2009, she also served as Minister of Transport and Minister for Nordic Cooperation until 2011. The Baltic Sea is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that is enclosed by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden and the North and Central European Plain.
