Vertebrate Land Invasion
The vertebrate land invasion refers to the aquatic-to-terrestrial transition of vertebrate organisms in the Late Devonian period. This transition allowed animals to escape competitive pressure from the water and explore niche opportunities on land. Fossils from this period have allowed scientists to identify some of the species that existed during this transition, such as Tiktaalik and Acanthostega. Many of these species were also the first to develop adaptations suited to terrestrial over aquatic life, such as neck mobility and hindlimb locomotion. The late Devonian vertebrate transition was preceded by the plant and invertebrate terrestrial invasion. These invasions allowed for the appropriate niche development that would ultimately facilitate the vertebrate invasion. Crassigyrinus
''Crassigyrinus'' (from la, crassus, 'thick' and el, γυρίνος el, gyrínos, 'tadpole') is an extinct genus of carnivorous stem tetrapod from the Early Carboniferous Limestone Coal Group of Scotland and possibly Greer, West Virginia. The type specimen was originally described as ''Macromerium scoticum'' and lacked a complete skull. With subsequent discoveries, ''Crassigyrinus'' is now known from three skulls, one of which is in articulation with a fairly complete skeleton, and two incomplete lower jaws. ''Crassigyrinus'' grew up to 2 meters in length, coupled with tiny limbs and unusually large jaws. Westlothiana
''Westlothiana'' ("animal from West Lothian") is a genus of reptile-like tetrapod that lived about 338 million years ago during the latest part of the Visean age of the Carboniferous. Members of the genus bore a superficial resemblance to modern-day lizards. The genus is known from a single species, ''Westlothiana lizziae''. ''Pederpes'' ("Peter's Foot") is an extinct genus of early Carboniferous tetrapod, dating from 348 to 347.6 Ma in the Tournaisian age (lower Mississippian).
