The Weakerthans
The Weakerthans are an award-winning and Juno-nominated Canadian indie rock band from Winnipeg. The band, led by John K. Samson, has released four studio albums and is currently inactive. History The band was formed in 1997 in Winnipeg, Manitoba by John K. Samson, after he left the punk band Propagandhi to start a publishing company. Samson joined bassist John P. Sutton and drummer Jason Tait of Red Fisher, another band from Winnipeg's punk scene, and created The Weakerthans as a vehicle for a more melodic and introspective brand of songwriting than their previous projects. The origin of the band's name was explained, in 2004 by Samson, as having come from "a few places." The first was a line from the 1992 film '' The Lover'': "Go ahead, I'm weaker than you can possibly imagine." Winnipeg () is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba in Canada. Jason Tait is a Canadian musician from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is the drummer for the Canadian indie rock band The Weakerthans. Tait has also been a contributing member of Broken Social Scene and The FemBots. Ian Blurton (born 1965) is a Canadian musician and record producer. Early life He was born in Champaign, Illinois in 1965, and moved to Toronto in 1973. Musical career He has been a part of Toronto's indie music scene since the early 1980s. He was playing drums in the original line-ups for Cowboy Junkies and A Neon Rome before he became the lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter for Change of Heart.Michael Barclay, Ian A.D. Sonnet
A sonnet is a poetic form that originated in the poetry composed at the Court of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in the Sicilian city of Palermo. The 13th-century poet and notary Giacomo da Lentini is credited with the sonnet's invention, and the Sicilian School of poets who surrounded him then spread the form to the mainland. The earliest sonnets, however, no longer survive in the original Sicilian language, but only after being translated into Tuscan dialect. Reconstruction Site
''Reconstruction Site'' is the third studio album by The Weakerthans, released on August 26, 2003. A song cycle about grief, regret, loss and eventual hope, the album is thematically framed by three tracks, "(Manifest)", "(Hospital Vespers)" and "(Past-Due)", which set three different sonnets following a terminally ill hospital patient into the aftermath of his death to the same melody. Other songs examine the album's themes from different angles: "Plea from a Cat Named Virtute"Some sources give the title as "Virtue" rather than "Virtute". ''Left and Leaving'' is the second studio album by The Weakerthans, released July 25, 2000, on G7 Welcoming Committee Records. In ''Chart'' magazine's 2005 poll of the Top 50 Canadian albums of all time, ''Left and Leaving'' ranked in sixth place. It was also nominated for Alternative Album of the Year at the 2001 Juno Awards. "Aside" appears on the soundtrack of the film ''Wedding Crashers''. Solidarity Forever
"Solidarity Forever", written by Ralph Chaplin in 1915, is a popular trade union anthem. It is sung to the tune of "John Brown's Body" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". Although it was written as a song for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), other union movements, such as the AFL–CIO, have adopted the song as their own. The song has been performed by musicians such as Utah Phillips, Pete Seeger, Leonard Cohen, and was redone by Emcee Lynx and The Nightwatchman.
