The Three Degrees
The Three Degrees is an American female vocal group formed circa 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although 16 women have been members over the years, the group has always been a trio. The current line-up consists of Helen Scott, Valerie Holiday, and Freddi Poole. The group were particularly successful in the UK, achieving 13 Top 50 hit singles between 1974 and 1985. The original members were Fayette Pinkney, Shirley Porter and Linda Turner. Porter and Turner were soon replaced by Janet Harmon and Helen Scott. The line-up from 1967 to 1976 was Pinkney, Valerie Holiday and Sheila Ferguson, who would go on to sing lead on most of the group's biggest hits. This line-up topped the US Hot 100 as featured vocalists on the MFSB single " TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" in 1974, and had seven UK Top 40 hits, including the 1974 single " When Will I See You Again", which was a huge international hit, reaching the Top 5 in seven countries, including number two in the US and topping th ... Freddi Poole
Freddi Pool (born September 12, 1946) is an American singer, known best for her work with the Former Ladies of the Supremes and The Three Degrees. Biography Raised in Los Angeles, she started her singing career in the church at the age of four, and got her first recording contract at the age of fourteen with the girl group "The Delicates". The quartet recorded several singles for the Challenge, Soultown, and Pulsar Record labels. Pool went on to become a founding member of the female trio: Wild Honey. R&B star Vesta Williams, and Mary Flowers were her groupmates. Ron Townson (of The 5th Dimension) was their mentor. The group disbanded in the early 1980s. Sundray Tucker
Sundray Tucker (born March 23, 1948) is an American singer. She is the eldest daughter of the late Ira Tucker (of the Dixie Hummingbirds) and Louise Tucker. Her sister is Lynda Laurence, once a member of the Supremes, and her brother is Ira Tucker Jr. Early career Born and raised in Philadelphia, Sundray was a member of an earlier version of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, the Ordettes; she left the group due to troubles in school before the group changed its name to the Blue Belles (later Bluebelles). Sundray also performed under the name Cindy Scott. Her most notable single was the Northern Soul classic "I Love You Baby", backed with "In Your Spare Time". In popular music, a cover version, cover song, remake, revival, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording by a musician other than the original performer or composer of the song. Richard Barrett (musician)
Richard Barrett (July 14, 1933 – August 3, 2006), also known as Richie Barrett, was an American singer, record producer, and songwriter. Biography Barrett was born in Philadelphia in 1933. He was an early fifties successful independent black record producer, influential in shaping the New York rhythm and blues sound. Barrett discovered and promoted Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, the Chantels, Little Anthony & the Imperials, the Valentines, and the Three Degrees. He managed the Chantels in the 1950s, and later managed the Three Degrees from the early 1960s until the early 1980s, producing many of their albums, and conducting the orchestra at their live shows. As an artist, he is most famous for co-writing (with Leiber and Stoller) and recording, as Richie Barrett, the song " Some Other Guy". Barrett sang lead for the Valentines from 1954 to 1957. "Woman in Love" is a romantic ballad which afforded the Three Degrees a top-ten UK hit in 1979. Composition and Twiggy recording "Woman in Love" was written by Frank Musker and Dominic Bugatti around the time of the March–April 1977 UK top-ten tenure of the Mary MacGregor hit "Torn Between Two Lovers", which according to Musker provided the template for "Woman in Love". Three Degrees lead vocalist Sheila Ferguson would be amazed that Musker and Bugatti could so convincingly express the feminine viewpoint evinced in their song's lyrics, to which Musker's response was: "She failed to realise…that the words of Woman In Love were the words that most men would like to hear their woman say." "When Will I See You Again" is a song released in 1974 by American soul group The Three Degrees from their third album, ''The Three Degrees''. The song was written and produced by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Sheila Ferguson sang the lead, accompanied by Fayette Pinkney and Valerie Holiday. ''Billboard'' named the song #67 on their list of 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time. Background Sheila Ferguson recalled that "the song was played to me by Kenny Gamble at the piano in 1973 and I threw a tantrum. I screamed and yelled and said I would never sing it. "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" is a 1974 hit recording by MFSB featuring vocals by The Three Degrees. A classic example of the Philadelphia soul genre, it was written by Gamble and Huff as the theme for the American musical television program ''Soul Train'', which specialized in African American musical performers. The single was released on the Philadelphia International Records label. It was the first television theme song to reach number one on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, and it is arguably the first disco song to reach that position.
