The Matador Song
"The Matador Song", which dates from 1930, is the school song of the Texas Tech University Red Raiders. History The song was created as part of a contest sponsored by the school newspaper, then known as ''The Toreador''. R.C. Marshall, the editor of the 1931 ''La Ventana La Ventana is a small fishing village on the shore of La Ventana Bay south of La Paz on the eastern side of the Baja California peninsula in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. The village was founded in the early 1940s by the La Paz pear ...'' was chosen as the winner and given a $25 prize. In the next year, Goin' Band Director Harry LeMaire rewrote the music to the song. Aside from that, it has remained unchanged since its creation. Despite Texas Tech adopting the Red Raider as its mascot in 1936, the song continues to refer to the original Matador mascot. Texas Tech Red Raiders
The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Lady Raiders are the athletic teams that represent Texas Tech University, located in Lubbock, Texas. The women's basketball team uses the name Lady Raiders, while the school's other women's teams use the "Red Raiders" name. The university's athletic program fields 17 varsity teams in 11 sports all of whom have combined to win 70 conference championships as well as 4 national championships. The Masked Rider and Raider Red serve as the mascots representing the teams, and the school colors are scarlet red and black. Texas Tech athletics teams compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level and is a founding member of the Big 12 Conference. ''The Daily Toreador'', also known as ''The DT'', is the student newspaper of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The newspaper was first published in 1925 as ''The Toreador'' and later changed its name to ''The University Daily'' before arriving at the current name in 2005. Texas Tech University Goin' Band From Raiderland
The Goin' Band from Raiderland is the 375-member marching band of Texas Tech University. History The Goin' Band from Raiderland, originally known as The Matador Band, is nearly as old as Texas Tech itself. Under the direction of W. Waghorne, it performed at the opening football game in October 1925, fielding between 21 and 25 members. In 1926, Harry Lemaire (1862–1963) was appointed director of the marching band. Following his service in the British Army, Lemaire had been bandmaster under Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish–American War and was a friend and colleague of John Philip Sousa. Under his leadership, the band earned its name when it became the first college band to travel to an away game. Also during Lemaire's tenure, the band became the first one to have its halftime show broadcast over the radio. The Masked Rider
The Masked Rider is the primary mascot of Texas Tech University. It is the oldest of the university's mascots still in existence today. Originally called "Ghost Rider", it was an unofficial mascot appearing in a few games in 1936 and then became the official mascot with the 1954 Gator Bowl. The Masked Rider has led the team onto the field at nearly every football game since. It is the nation's first school mascot to feature a live horse at a football game, ahead of Florida State's Chief Osceola and Renegade and 25 years before USC's Traveler and all other such mascots in existence today. After learning of the Masked Rider, other schools emulated the idea of a mounted mascot. Florida State began their tradition in 1978, immediately after seeing Texas Tech's live mascot at the 1977 Tangerine Bowl that pitted the two.
