Television In India
The television industry in India is very diverse and produces thousands of programs in many of the Indian languages. More than half of all Indian households own a television. As of 2016, the country had over 857 channels of which 184 were pay channels. The Hindi, Telugu and Tamil language television industries are by far the largest television industries in India. Pay Television
Pay television, also known as subscription television, premium television or, when referring to an individual service, a premium channel, refers to subscription-based television services, usually provided by multichannel television providers, but also increasingly via digital terrestrial, and streaming television. In the United States, subscription television began in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the form of encrypted analog over-the-air broadcast television which could be decrypted with special equipment. The concept rapidly expanded through the multi-channel transition and into the post-network era. Other parts of the world beyond the United States, such as France and Latin America have also offered encrypted analog terrestrial signals available for subscription. ''Prabir Roy'' ( bn, প্রবীর রায় ; born 31 August 1948) is a Bengali producer, director, actor and a former Sheriff of Kolkata. He made his debut as a feature film maker with the film ''Kaal Madhumas''. Early life Roy is a commerce graduate from the University of Calcutta. He was a national level swimmer in his younger days. Grew up in a posh locality in South Kolkata. He has the distinction of introducing colour T.V. coverage in India in Feb-March, 1982 during the 1st Nehru Gold Cup. This was held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in February 1982. Malgudi Days (TV Series)
''Malgudi Days'' is an Indian television series that started in 1986, and was filmed in both English (first 13 episodes) and Hindi (all 54 episodes), based on the 1943 short story collection of the same name by R. K. Narayan. The series was directed by Kannada actor and director Shankar Nag. Carnatic musician L. Vaidyanathan composed the score, while R.K. Narayan's younger brother and acclaimed cartoonist R. ''Rangoli'' is an Indian music television series which airs on DD National every Sunday morning. The word literally means a decoration of colors. The show is produced by Doordarshan. A few seasons were also produced by Creative Eye Limited. Same language subtitling is used in the show to improve literacy in rural areas. History ''Rangoli'' first aired in 1988 and was widely watched in the 1990s. It was popular even outside India, especially in places like the Middle East or the United States, which had a large number of people of Indian origin. Chitrahaar
''Chitrahaar'' is a television program on DD National featuring song clips from Bollywood films. It was widely watched in the 1980s and 1990s. The word literally means 'a garland of pictures', or more liberally, 'a story of pictures'. History ''Chitrahaar'' first aired in 1982. In 1997, ''Chitrahaar'' went back to private producers, with ''Chitrahaar'' going to Amit Khanna of Plus Channel. In 2010, ''Chitrahaar'' started using same language subtitling (SLS), where Hindi subtitles of the song's lyrics scroll across the screen. The idea behind SLS is that people who are just learning to read would benefit by reading lyrics of the songs they are listening to and watching. It is an engaging way to promote literacy, especially in villages. This initiative of Doordarshan has been technically supported by the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Chandrakanta (1994 TV Series)
''Chandrakanta'' is an Indian fantasy television series partly based on Devaki Nandan Khatri's 1888 novel of the same name. It was originally telecast on DD National between 1994 and 1996 and was created, written, produced, and directed by Nirja Guleri. It began telecast on Doordarshan, India's national network on 7 July 1984, then the only television channel of India.
