Tea Classics
Tea as a beverage was first consumed in China and the earliest extant mention of tea in literature is the ''Classic of Poetry'', although the ideogram used (Tu, 荼) in these texts can also designate a variety of plants, such as sowthistle and thrush. Chinese literature contains a significant number of ancient treatises on tea. Together, there exist approximately one hundred monographs or treatises on tea published from the Tang dynasty through the end of the Ming dynasty. The more famous books on tea are listed below. Xuan He Bei Yuan Gong Cha Lu
''Record of Xuan He Era Tribute Tea in Bei Yuan District'' () is a book written by Xiong Fan during the Song Dynasty. The book contains detailed descriptions of the names of various tribute tea cakes and their packaging, some even with dimensions. Two examples of such descriptions are "Longevity Dragon cake, silver mold, bamboo frame, one inch diameter" and "Eternal Spring Jade Leaf, bamboo frame, diameter 3½ inch.". Wen Zhenheng
Wen Zhenheng (, 1585–1645) was a Ming dynasty scholar, painter, landscape garden designer, and great grandson of Wen Zhengming, a famous Ming dynasty painter. Wen was born in Suzhou in 1585. In 1621, he graduated from the Imperial Academy, obtained the lowest degree of '' zhusheng''. In 1637, Wen was the assistant magistrate of Longzhou county in the Shanxi prefecture. On the same year, he was appointed Secretariat Drafter Clunas argues for a composition date of 1616-20. For his discussion of the matter, see p. 27 by Chongzhen Emperor. Wen Zhenheng was famous for his calligraphy, poetry and essays. He was also an expert in landscape garden design, the Sweetgrass Garden he built in Suzhou was famous at his time. Gao Lian (dramatist)
Gao Lian (, fl. 16th century), was Chinese writer, dramatist and encyclopedist.Cihai: Page 2045. Gao Lian was born in Qiantang (钱塘 - present day Hangzhou). His courtesy name was Shenfu (深甫) and his pseudonym was Ruinan Daoren (瑞南道人). He is known to have written the plays ''Jiexiaoji'' (节孝记) and ''Yuzanji'' (玉簪记, "The Jade Hairpin"). Of the two, he is most noted for latter, a romantic drama about a young impoverished scholar and a Daoist nun. The piece remains a classic of the Ming period theater in thirty-three scenes, some of which are still performed today. In his discussion of mental illness (''hsin-ping''), successfully diagnosed the condition now known as bipolar disorder. Gao advised his readers to avoid abortion and show concern for the elderly and physically weak. Tu Long
Tu Long (; Wade-Giles: T'u Lung, 1542–1605), was a playwright and essayist who lived during the Ming Dynasty. He was born in Yin county (now Yin county, in suburb of Ningbo city, Zhejiang). In 1577, Tu Long obtained the degree of jinshi. He later became the Chief Magistrate of Qingpu (now Qingpu county, Shanghai ). He lost his position as Secretary of the Ministry of Rites after launching licentious parties with boy prostitutes; after that, he concentrated on writing plays and essays. Tu Long rejected the adherence to strict ancient format, he advocated that a writer must write from his heart. He lived 62–63 years. Cha Pu
The ''Cha Pu'' () is a short work written in 1440 by Zhu Quan, the Prince of Ning, the 17th son of the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming dynasty, and relates the methods of tea preparation and degustation. It is considered by some to be a milestone in Chinese tea culture. Following the Hongwu Emperor's ban on manufacturing of tea cake, Zhu Quan advocated a simpler way of steeping loose tea, a radical departure from the involved tea cake preparation methods of the Tang and Song dynasties, thus pioneered a new era in Chinese tea culture.
