The Rainkings
The Rainkings are an English indie rock band, formed in 1989 by former members of Inspiral Carpets and The Bodines. History Stephen Holt had been the original singer in Inspiral Carpets, performing on their first few releases, including the ''Planecrash'' and ''Trainsurfing'' EP's plus the ''Dung 4'' demo album. Holt left, along with Dave Swift in 1988, forming The Rainkings along with ex- Bodines drummer John Rowland, and bassist Carl Wolstenholme. The band released two singles on Playtime Records in 1989 and 1990. ''Sictransitgloriaswanson'' was released in 1989 and featured the songs "Sunlight Fades", "Count Me In", "Break the Strain" and "Just An Idea". ''Get Ready'' was released in 1990 and featured the songs "Get Ready", "Move Along the Chain" and "Too Many Words". The latter featured in the 2013 Spike Island film. Alternative Rock
Alternative rock, or alt-rock, is a category of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1970s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Strawberry Studios
Strawberry Studios was a recording studio in Stockport, England. Founded in 1968, it operated until the early 1990s. Formation The facility was originally called Inter-City Studios and located above a music store in the town centre. In early 1968 it was bought by Peter Tattersall, a former road manager for Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas. Tattersall invited Eric Stewart, then lead guitarist and singer of the Mindbenders and later a member of 10cc, to join him as a partner in July 1968. The pair moved to larger premises at No. 3 Waterloo Road in October, with Stewart choosing the studio's new name in honour of his favourite Beatles song, "Strawberry Fields Forever". Within months songwriter and future 10cc member Graham Gouldman joined the pair as an investor. The studio was used extensively by Stewart, Gouldman and the other two musicians who would join them to form 10cc, Lol Creme and Kevin Godley. Cherry Red Records
Cherry Red Records is a British independent record label founded in Malvern, Worcestershire by Iain McNay in 1978. The label has released recordings by Dead Kennedys, Everything But the Girl, The Monochrome Set, and Felt, among others, as well as the compilation album ''Pillows & Prayers''. In addition to releasing new music, Cherry Red also acts as an umbrella for individual imprints and catalogue specialists. Cherry Red was listed by ''Music Week'' as one of the UK's top ten record companies in Q1 2015 for sales of artist albums. Spike Island (film)
''Spike Island'' is a 2012 British comedy film directed by Mat Whitecross and written by Chris Coghill. It was distributed by Universal Pictures and Vertigo Films and produced by Revolver Entertainment. The film is based on The Stone Roses' seminal gig on Spike Island in Widnes, Cheshire, England, and follows the story of a group of friends who idolise the band and try to get into the gig, but are faced with problems because they do not have a ticket or a way to get there. Oldham Evening Chronicle
The ''Oldham Evening Chronicle'' was a daily newspaper published each weekday evening. It served the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England. There were also four sister editions, called the ''Oldham Extra'', ''Saddleworth Extra'', ''Tameside Extra'' and ''Dale Times'', which were published on the first Thursday of each month. The paper was owned by Hirst, Kidd and Rennie Ltd. In February 2018, the main Evening Chronicle title relaunched online after it was bought by a local radio station. Thea Eve Gilmore (born 25 November 1979), also known as Afterlight, is an English singer-songwriter. She has released more than twenty albums since her 1998 debut '' Burning Dorothy''. She has had three Top 40 entries on the UK Albums Chart and one on the UK Singles Chart. Her first album as Afterlight was released on 15 October 2021. Early life Gilmore was born in Oxford to Irish parents and lived in the village of North Aston, Oxfordshire. I Am Kloot
I Am Kloot were an English rock band, formed in Manchester in 1999. The band was composed of vocalist/guitarist John Bramwell, bassist Peter Jobson and drummer Andy Hargreaves. The band released six studio albums, and was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2010 for the album '' Sky at Night''. The band split up in 2016, with Bramwell concentrating on a solo career. The origin of the band name was shrouded in secrecy for the majority of the band's existence, with Bramwell stating in 2013 that the band "never said and we never will" confirm the origin of the name and joked that "If I told you, I'd have to kill you". Ian Broudie
Ian Zachary Broudie (born 4 August 1958) is an English musician and singer-songwriter from Liverpool. After emerging from the post-punk scene in Liverpool in the late 1970s as a member of Big in Japan, Broudie went on to produce albums (sometimes under the name Kingbird) for artists including Echo & the Bunnymen, the Fall, the Coral, the Zutons and the Subways. Around 1989, he began writing and recording under the name Lightning Seeds, releasing the album ''Cloudcuckooland'' through Rough Trade on the independent label Ghetto Records, eventually putting together a live touring band in 1994. The Lightning Seeds achieved great commercial success during much of the 1990s. In 2004, Broudie released an album titled ''Tales Told'' under his own name. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. ''Dung 4'' is a demo album by the British indie rock band Inspiral Carpets. It was first released in May 1989 on Inspiral Carpets' own Cow Records and only on cassette. The name refers to the catalogue number. In 2014, it was announced that ''Dung 4'' would be re-released on vinyl and CD on Cherry Red Records on 19 and 28 April respectively, with the contents of Inspiral Carpets' earlier demo EP ''Cow'', as bonus tracks. On the LP version, ''Cow'' was included as a bonus 7-inch EP, while on the CD its tracks were appended to the end of the ''Dung 4'' program. A second vinyl reissue of ''Dung 4'' was released on the Tiger Bay label in Europe, containing the entire contents of both demos on a single album.
