Tarphycerida
The Tarphycerida were the first of the coiled cephalopods, found in marine sediments from the Lower Ordovician (middle and upper Canad) to the Middle Devonian. Some, such as '' Aphetoceras'' and '' Estonioceras'', are loosely coiled and gyroconic; others, such as '' Campbelloceras'', '' Tarphyceras'', and '' Trocholites'', are tightly coiled, but evolute with all whorls showing. Cephalopods
A cephalopod is any member of the molluscan class Cephalopoda (Greek plural , ; "head-feet") such as a squid, octopus, cuttlefish, or nautilus. These exclusively marine animals are characterized by bilateral body symmetry, a prominent head, and a set of arms or tentacles (muscular hydrostats) modified from the primitive molluscan foot. Fishers sometimes call cephalopods "inkfish", referring to their common ability to squirt ink. The study of cephalopods is a branch of malacology known as teuthology. Cephalopods became dominant during the Ordovician period, represented by primitive nautiloids. Tarphyceratidae
The Tarphyceratidae are tightly coiled, evolute Tarphycerida with ventral siphuncles. The dorsum is characteristically impressed where the whorl presses against the venter of the previous. The Tarphyceratidae are derived from ''Bassleroceras'' or possibly from some member of the Estonioceratidae. Tarphyceratids vary in form and siphuncle position. The siphuncle may be subcentral as in ''Centrotarphyceras''; intermediary as in '' Tarphyceras'', or subventral as in '' Campbelloceras''. Cross sections vary. ''Tarphyceras'' and ''Campbelloceras'' are rounded. ''Centrotarphyceras'' is subquadrate with broadly rounded flanks and a slightly rounded venter. Bassleroceras
''Bassleroceras'' is an elongate upwardly curved, exogastric, genus with the venter on the under side more sharply rounded than the dorsum on the upper. The siphuncle is ventral, composed of thick-walled tubular segments in which connection rings thicken in towardly as in both the Ellesmerocerida and primitive Tarphycerida. Bassleroceratidae
The Bassleroceratidae is a family of gradually expanding, smooth ellesmerocerids with a slight to moderate exogastric curvature, subcircular to strongly compressed cross section, and ventral orthochaonitc siphuncle. The ventral side is typically more sharply rounded than the dorsal side and septa are close spaced. Aphetoceras
''Aphetoceras'' is a genus of tarphycerid cephalopod within the Estonioceratidae; loosely coiled without an impression along the dorsal margin; early whorls barely reaching, separating then diverging in the final mature whorl; weakly ribbed in some. The cross section of ''Aphetoceras'' is higher than wide, making it compressed in form. The dorsum, along the inner curve, is more broadly rounded than the venter which lies along the outer curve. The siphuncle is relatively large, located near but not at the ventral margin; lined with secondary deposits. Chambers are empty. ''Aphetoceras'' is similar in outline to the related '' Estonioceras'' and ''Alaskoceras'' but most similar in cross section to '' Clytoceras''. Ophidioceratidae
''Ophioceras'' is a genus of closely coiled tarphycerid nautiloid cephalopods, the sole representatives of the family Ophidioceratidae, characterized by an evolute shell with narrow, subrounded, annulated whorls and a subcentral siphuncle composed of thin connecting rings that show no evidence of layering. The mature body chamber is strongly divergent and is the longest proportionally of any tarphycerid. The aperture has a deep hyponomic sinus and ocular sinuses, and so resembles some lituitids. Trocholitidae
The Trocholitidae are Tarphycerida with whorls in close contact as with the Tarphyceratidae, but in which the siphuncle, similar in structure, becomes dorsal. The Trocholitidae are derived from the Tarphyceratidae, perhaps from different tarphyceratids. Members of the Trocholitidae vary in whorl section and siphuncle position. Most are tightly coiled with the dorsum impressed to some degree. As exceptions ''Arkoceras'' and ''Wichitoceras'' have their whorls touching but without a dorsal impression. The Estonioceratidae are a family of loosely coiled tarphycerids in which the inner side of the whorls, which forms the dorsum, is rounded or flat with no impression, and in which the siphuncle, composed of thick tubular segments, is located ventrally. ''Trocholites'' is a tarphycerid genus in the family Trocholitidae from the Middle and Late Ordovician with a gradually expanding, weakly ribbed shell; whorls in contact, dorsum slightly impressed; cross section depressed, venter and sides rounded; siphuncle close to but not at the dorsal margin. The dorsal siphuncle of ''Trocholites'', and the Trocholitidae is somewhat anomalous and may indicate something about the orientation of the shell during life; placing the last septum high rather than midway or low, typical of most. Barrandeoceratidae
The Barrandeoceratidae is a family of coiled nautiloids included in the Tarphycerida (''sensu lato'') that lived from the Middle Ordovician to the Middle Devonian, characterised by mostly compressed shells with a subcentral siphuncle composed of thin-walled segments that may become secondarily ventral.(Flower and Kummel 1950, Sweet 1964). The Barrandeoceratidae are derived from the tarphyceratid genus, ''Centrotarphyceras'' through '' Barrandeoceras'' (Flower 1984), and is the source for the Uranoceratidae and Nephriticeratidae. Campbelloceras
''Campbelloceras'' is a tarphyceratid nautiloid known from the Lower Ordovician, Upper Canadian Epoch of North America, where it is widespread. ''Campbelloceras'' was named by Ulrich and Foerste in 1936. The shell of ''Campbelloceras'' has a circular whorl section, only slightly impressed, and a siphuncle that is close to the venter in all growth stages.
