Subdwarf Star
A subdwarf, sometimes denoted by "sd", is a star with luminosity class VI under the Yerkes spectral classification system. They are defined as stars with luminosity 1.5 to 2 magnitudes lower than that of main-sequence stars of the same spectral type. On a Hertzsprung–Russell diagram subdwarfs appear to lie below the main sequence. The term "subdwarf" was coined by Gerard Kuiper in 1939, to refer to a series of stars with anomalous spectra that were previously labeled as "intermediate white dwarfs". Since Kuiper coined the term, the subdwarf type has been extended to lower-mass stars than were known at the time. Luminosity Class
In astronomy, stellar classification is the classification of stars based on their stellar spectrum, spectral characteristics. Electromagnetic radiation from the star is analyzed by splitting it with a Prism (optics), prism or diffraction grating into a spectrum exhibiting the Continuum (spectrum), rainbow of colors interspersed with spectral lines. Each line indicates a particular chemical element or molecule, with the line strength indicating the abundance of that element. The strengths of the different spectral lines vary mainly due to the temperature of the photosphere, although in some cases there are true abundance differences. The ''spectral class'' of a star is a short code primarily summarizing the ionization state, giving an objective measure of the photosphere's temperature. GJ 1062 is a single red dwarf star in the constellation Eridanus (constellation), Eridanus, positioned about two degrees to the SSE of Epsilon Eridani. It is also known as Luyten Half-Second catalogue, LHS 20 and Frank Elmore Ross, Ross 578. The star is invisible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of +13.0, requiring a telescope with at least a aperture to view. It is located at a distance of 52.7 light years from the Sun based on stellar parallax, parallax, but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −85 km/s. The star has a high proper motion, traversing the sky at the rate of per year. This is an M-type star, M-type subdwarf star with a stellar classification of M2.5VI. It was one of the first three subdwarfs to be definitively identified by Gerard Kuiper, G. Kuiper in 1940, the other two being Kapteyn's Star and Wolf 1106. Kapteyn's Star
Kapteyn's Star is a class M1 red subdwarf about 12.83 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Pictor; it is the closest halo star to the Solar System. With an apparent magnitude of nearly 9, it is visible through binoculars or a telescope. Its diameter is 30% of the Sun's, but its luminosity just 1.2% that of the Sun. It may have once been part of the globular cluster Omega Centauri, itself the likely core of a dwarf galaxy swallowed up by the Milky Way in the distant past. Galactic Halo
A galactic halo is an extended, roughly spherical component of a galaxy which extends beyond the main, visible component. Several distinct components of a galaxy comprise its halo: * the stellar halo * the galactic corona (hot gas, i.e. a plasma) * the dark matter halo The distinction between the halo and the main body of the galaxy is clearest in spiral galaxies, where the spherical shape of the halo contrasts with the flat disc. In an elliptical galaxy, there is no sharp transition between the other components of the galaxy and the halo.
