Speaker Of Toronto City Council
The Speaker of Toronto City Council chairs meetings of Toronto City Council. With the written consent of the Mayor, the Speaker and a Deputy Speaker are elected by Toronto City Council from among its members. While municipal council meetings in Ontario are traditionally chaired by the head of Council (e.g. Mayor, Warden, Reeve or Regional Chair), the City of Toronto Act allows Toronto Council to appoint another member as a presiding officer. Toronto Council has opted to use this provision and the election of presiding officers with the titles Speaker and Deputy Speaker is authorized by s. 27-6.4 of the Council Procedures. Unlike "Speakers" in parliamentary assemblies, the Council Speaker has no other duties outside of presiding over meetings. The Mayor is considered to be the Chair of Council for all other purposes. Toronto City Council is the governing body of the municipal government of Toronto, Ontario. Meeting at Toronto City Hall, it comprises 25 city councillors and the mayor of Toronto. The current term began on November 15, 2022. Structure The current decision-making framework and committee structure at the City of Toronto was established by the '' City of Toronto Act, 2006'' and came into force January 1, 2007. The decision-making process at the City of Toronto involves committees that report to City Council. Committees propose, review and debate policies and recommendations before their arrival at City Council for debate. John Parker (Canadian Politician)
John L. Parker (born ) is a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for York East from 1995 to 1999. From 2006 to 2014 he was a Toronto city councillor for Ward 26, which includes the neighbourhoods of Leaside and Flemingdon Park. From 2010 to 2014 he was appointed as Deputy Speaker. Ward 2 Etobicoke Centre is a municipal electoral division in Etobicoke, Toronto, Ontario that has been represented in the Toronto City Council since the 2018 municipal election. Stephen Holyday is a Canadian politician who has served on Toronto City Council since 2014. He is currently the deputy speaker and represents Ward 2 Etobicoke Centre. Glenn De Baeremaeker ( ) is a former city councillor in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, who represented Ward 38, one of the two former Scarborough Centre wards from 2003-2018. The son of working-class parents, he has a master's degree in international development and spent six months in Ethiopia at the height of the 1980s famine.
